How to watch YouTube together online

In short

The simplest way is to share a browser tab with its sound on a video call: most YouTube videos aren't copy-protected, so the other person sees and hears them. For synced playback, Discord's Watch Together and Teleparty's free tier both handle YouTube, and SharePlay works on iPhone and iPad if the person starting it has YouTube Premium. Google's help pages for YouTube co-watching in Meet no longer load, so we wouldn't plan a night around it.

On this page

YouTube is the easy one. Netflix and most paid streamers turn into a black rectangle the moment you share them, but an ordinary YouTube video isn't copy-protected, so nearly every method works with it, including the plain screen share that fails everywhere else.

That leaves one real decision: do you want two copies playing in sync, each on your own device, or one person showing the other? Sync gives both of you full picture quality and your own pause button. Showing (sharing a tab) needs nothing installed on the other side and keeps you on camera together.

Share a tab: works with almost any YouTube video

Open the video in its own tab, start a call in any app that can share your screen, choose to share that tab (not a window or the whole screen) and switch on the tab-audio option before you press Share. In desktop Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera and Arc that switch sits in the browser's share picker; Firefox and Safari don't send a tab's sound at all. Our tab audio guide has the details and the echo fixes.

Why it suits YouTube in particular:

  • No account or app on the other side. Your partner sees your tab, so it doesn't matter whether they have YouTube Premium, a YouTube account, or a laptop.
  • Captions travel with the picture. Turn them on in your player and they appear for both of you, which helps with a creator who mumbles or a video in another language.
  • Rabbit holes are allowed. You can wander from a cooking video to a documentary to a music video without anyone rejoining a party or rebuilding a playlist.

The limits are real, though. Only the person sharing can pause or rewind, so agree on a word for "pause" (most couples just say it). The picture is only as sharp as the sharer's upload connection allows; if it stutters, closing cloud backups or a second call on the same Wi-Fi does more than any setting. Films you rent or buy on YouTube are paid content, and paid content is often copy-protected. We couldn't confirm how YouTube's own rentals behave, so test a few seconds before you settle in.

Tip: On Couch, it's a tab share with your faces next to it

In a Couch room, one of you presses Start Watching and shares the YouTube tab with its sound from desktop Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera or Arc. The other person can watch in any browser, including a phone turned sideways for full screen, and you both stay on camera. Tick the tab-audio box in the picker: Couch doesn't remind you, and without it the video plays silently on their side.

Discord Watch Together

Discord's Watch Together is a shared YouTube player inside a voice channel or call, with a playlist you both add to. It's the only option here built for YouTube and nothing else, and it works on Discord's desktop and mobile apps.

Our comparison of every method covers how it works. The part that matters for a long evening: Discord's own FAQ says playback is limited to 180 minutes per person when watching with others (30 minutes alone), followed by a 10-minute cool-down. Fine for a run of videos, awkward for a three-hour video essay.

Teleparty

Teleparty, the extension that began as Netflix Party, lists YouTube among the services in its free version, which gives you "basic video synchronization and text chat", according to its support page. Each of you installs the extension in desktop Chrome, Edge, Safari or Opera, one of you starts a party on a YouTube video, and the other opens the link.

Two things to know. Voice and video chat are part of the paid Premium tier, so on the free version you'll want a separate call running, with headphones to stop the video echoing. And the mobile apps support fewer services than the extension; Teleparty's own support page lists the services differently in two places, so check the app listing before relying on YouTube on a phone.

SharePlay with YouTube on iPhone and iPad

If you're both on Apple, this is the most polished option. YouTube's help page says a YouTube Premium member starts the session during a FaceTime call, signed in with a personal Google account, and once it's started, others can join without Premium. It's available on iPhone and iPad only.

Apple's iPhone guide describes how SharePlay generally behaves: the video starts at the same moment for everyone, each person can play, pause or skip, and captions and volume are set separately on each device. You can keep each other's faces on screen in FaceTime while you watch.

What it can't do: include anyone on Android or Windows. They can join a FaceTime call from a browser, but Apple says SharePlay and screen sharing aren't available in FaceTime on the web.

What happened to Google Meet's YouTube co-watching?

In 2022 Google tested co-watching YouTube inside Meet calls. As 9to5Google reported at the time, it needed YouTube Premium and ran on Android only. Google's own YouTube help pages later described it the same way.

As of October 2026, those help pages return "not found", and we couldn't confirm the feature still works. Meet's help centre still documents live streaming a meeting to YouTube, but that broadcasts your call to a YouTube channel; it isn't a way for two people to watch a video together. If Meet is what you both use, a tab share inside the call is the dependable route.

What YouTube itself offers

We found no button on YouTube itself for two people in different places to watch the same video together, apart from the SharePlay support above. Two built-in features help around the edges:

  • A collaborative playlist works as your shared queue. Open a playlist, choose Share, then Invite collaborators, and the other person can add videos during the week. If the playlist is private, YouTube's help page says you'll be asked to make it unlisted or public before the invite goes out, so don't use it for anything you'd rather keep private.
  • Premieres let a creator release a new video that everyone watches at the same moment, with live chat. Viewers can rewind but can't skip ahead. If a creator you both follow premieres something, open it at the same time and you're watching in sync without any extra tool.

Which one should you use?

  • One of you is on a phone or a work laptop where you can't install things: a tab share from whoever has a desktop browser.
  • You both use Discord already: Watch Together, as long as the session stays under three hours each.
  • You both have laptops and want your own pause button: Teleparty, with a separate call for voices.
  • You're both on iPhone or iPad and one of you has Premium: SharePlay.
  • You're on different platforms and different time zones: the tab share, because the person whose evening it is can do all the setup. Our time zones guide helps with picking the hour.

Key takeaways

  • Most YouTube videos aren't copy-protected, so a tab share with sound works where Netflix would show black; rented or bought films are paid content and may not.
  • Discord Watch Together syncs YouTube on desktop and mobile but stops each person after 180 minutes with others, then a 10-minute cool-down.
  • Teleparty's free version supports YouTube in desktop browsers with a text chat; voice and video chat are paid extras.
  • SharePlay with YouTube works on iPhone and iPad; only the person starting it needs Premium, and Android and Windows users can't join in.
  • Google's help pages for YouTube co-watching in Meet no longer load as of October 2026, so don't build a plan on it.

Frequently asked questions

If I have YouTube Premium and share my tab, does the other person see ads?

A tab share shows the other person exactly what your tab shows. If your tab plays without ads because you have Premium, they see it without ads too.

Can we watch YouTube together on a TV?

Teleparty doesn't run on smart TVs. With SharePlay, Apple's iPhone guide says you can send a video you're watching together to an Apple TV 4K and keep the FaceTime call going on the phone.
